Yekaterinburg (some days ago..when I turned sweet 32..)

Within the Ural mountain range, it is the 4th largest city in Russia. The city’s chief industry is production of Urals’ minerals; metals and gems – the green with black stripes, Malachite stone is especially beautiful and well known.  But the city is most famous for the assassination of the last Tsar and his family; the Romanovs in 1918.  There are numerous versions of the story; the city’s drama doesn’t end there; more recent incident in 1960 involving Gary Powers, the US pilot who was shot down in the area. Not far outside the city centre  also marks the Asia and European border – I am 4685km from London!

The city's birthday was on the same day as mine - great! The whole city celebrated with me - the main roads were pedestrianised and there are small and big stages dotted around the town with performances of all kinds.  To top it all, the hotel sent up a complimentary bottle of Champanskoe (love it) for me and the day ended with fireworks!
